A beautiful sister friend of mine has been relishing in the joy of pre-marriage festivities for the past few months and I've had the good fortune to be present among all the bliss. During the pre-wedding occasions up to, and including, the wedding reception (a lovely affair if I do say so myself) a dear couple has been hinting at a potential dating partner. It began with, "are you single and interested in meeting a good looking, intelligent and witty British man?"
Thinking, "hell yes," my actual response was, "I'm open but neutral, also I have a tendency to speak in a British accent when I hear one." This is not my most charming quality as I am sure David from Chamonix can attest...and all the other guests who were constantly in ear shot of my loud passionate vocal expressions.
After the recommendation by top notch folks that I should meet this single British man I did what any girl in her right mind would do. I facebook stalked him. To my utter vulnerability and insecurity he was handsome, clever and made me laugh out loud...his FB page did not have the privacy settings my often over-cautious (but not in this case) sister insists upon. Immediately I felt like I wasn't ready to meet what seemed to be a stellar man and went into that old uncomfortable insecure place.
Nothing came of the initial set-up idea so I tried to just let it go and get my focus back. I was doing so well before this...happy as ever following my career path and inspiration. Then the wedding came and all the love, spaghetti and wine, combined with another mention of British man sent me into further head games and determination. I began toying with the thought of taking matters into my own hands but first I deliberately asked my angel guides for their guidance. On the car ride home from the wedding weekend I turned off the music and asked out loud, "angel guides, should I take the risk and make contact?" My mom called as the question left my lips filling to void of the care and I answered phone in my charming British accent, "Ell-O Mummy!"
Hmmmm....did I do that or did the angels? I'm gonna need a more obvious sign here. Taking control of the situation once again I made my dinner guests be my angel guides. With their support I formulated a clever FB message introduction and a non-coincedental meet-up invitation. Then I waited. And waited. And felt fat and ugly, stupid and anxious and unworthy... (And let's be honest, self-rejection is the most damaging kind. Luckily I got over it with some assistance from relationship cards and supportive peeps. I am not proud that I still go there sometimes but it feels good to recognize and now how to get out.)
48 hours later the "ping" of my phone, unlike the 32 other disappointing times, was finally his response. It was lengthy so I had a bad feeling from the start. Basically it was a "thanks but I am still working on myself" deal. It was eloquently written for fb standards. Full of integrity, authenticity and thoughtfulness. Just the thing to piss a girl off and make her want you even more. He closed it with, "I do hope I meet you sometime soon in an entirely coincidental fashion". (Here is where I had a few days of clarity in my current self-awareness and relationship desires... This enlightenment took me to a whole new dimension- I even emailed an ex out of the blue to make amends of sorts. What can I say? The British have always inspired me. My favorite movie is "Love Actually". I try to pick outfits that I could imagine Katherine Duchess of Cambridge approving.)
Back to back girl's nights grounded into my reality and I began to settle my questioning mind and heart. Here's where it gets interesting...
On my way to dinner tonight I was discussing the idea of adopting a dog with another sister friend. She suggested I make a list of the qualities I wanted in the dog and send it to the adoption agency. Then they would let me know when a dog was available. The right dog would come at the right time. Prior to this conversation, in the course of 4 hours, I had the spontaneous idea to get a doddle and actually considered spending upwards of $1500 on a puppy I could get delivered in one week. I think we know where this is going....realizing it was just my instant gratification wanting to be fulfilled, I called the woman who can effectively save me from myself. So- medium size, non-shedding, adult, trained, chilled out, cuddly. That's my dog desire list. Done. Easy peasy.
Dinner tonight infused me with red wine, pizza and the laughter of girlfriends. Our final conversation topic- The Brit, or lack thereof. As I walked towards the door I gave myself permission to hope for something sweet with a good man even if it's one I hardly know and may never meet. What's the harm in having a little faith?... When I looked up from my internal dialogue he was walking towards me. Two feet away, instantly with out a doubt I recognized him and called his name. We hugged, had a brief exchange of words and wished the other a good night followed by a few cordial fb messages. AHhhhhhhhhhh....I hear angels singing. No idea what is next here...maybe a golden doodle.
Wishing you faith in love and life,
Uptown Girl

August 28th, 2012
Buzzing at the Newark Airport during a 5 hour layover. Mostly because this adventure is really happening and because I checked my mail right before leaving home. To may dismay I had a letter from the collections agency stating that I was expected to pay the cost of that phantom plane ticket I never intended to purchase. Instead of getting too worked up...okay, so maybe I had to have a mini counseling sesh with mom on the way to the airport, but by the time my bags were checked I decided the letter and any anxiety it delivered would stay in the states until I returned from across the sea.
Somebody somewhere said, "wherever you go, there you are." Here I am in all my life-is-an-awesome-journey glory sitting in the Newark airport when I get the first call from the collector. Dun, dun duuuuuun. It may be my collection agency ignorance or numerous calls to insurance agencies for work, but somehow I get the nerve to kindly tell the lady on the other end that I will not be paying for anything at this moment and that I will be discussing it with my lawyer. I hang up and freak out. (When I freak out I call everyone I know to get help.) First my mom, then I call my accountant/attorney...Blah blah blah. After a 30 min chat we decided I should just pay it when I get home. Begrudgingly that settled it- Now let's go to France!
An in-flight movie, meal and restless plane sleep lands me in Geneva the next morning. I remember feeling out of place and overwhelmed even in the airport while waiting for my express bus to the Chalet. I wander the hall looking for a cafe or shop I can feel comfortable going in and chilling for the next hour. After much internal dialogue and anxiety I finally decide to just sit my butt on the floor, eat my packed snack and read until pick up time. This, "sit your butt down," method has a familiar ring to it. Some past mantra or...hmmmm. Ah ha!...That good ol' "Sit. Stay" of my Mac&Cheese days. They say life is just one opportunity after another to learn the same lesson. They be right. This time the anxiety was less about sexual desires but the method of coping was the same. I find out later that I will get some more practice when I have a mini existential crisis in Florence.
Five hours later, the ChamExpress lands me at the chalet and into the welcoming arms of my yoga instructor and lovely British Host. Surrounded by the exquisite French alps anxiety and stress become like childhood wounds long forgotten (but never far). We will call said British Host, "Love Bug". It only took 24 hours for me to start speaking with a loud British accent. Which is about 1/2 the time it took my roomie to find another kind of love with Mr. Love Bug. Let's be honest though, who could resist a man with a British accent and popped collar making you fresh croissants every morning with nutella. God bless him.
Rain is in the forecast but my first day in the clean air of the french alps, walking the river path and dining on wine and cheese makes me think I may just survive this life after all. Plus, for just this weekend, there are approximately 7000 extra men in Chamonix. To my dismay they are all jogging some ridiculous distance through rain, snow and mud without sleep for the better part of their stay. It's the North Face Ultra Trail and the gentlemen are ultra fit and ultra type A. (We all know where that has gotten me in the past). I did enjoy cheering on those that did the "mini trail", 80km/8000 meters up and down. That's about 2 marathons, which is two too many for this chic.
There is fresh snow on the higher peaks that line the valley. Breathing the air makes me realize I haven't taken a fresh breath of air since my last trip to Boulder. It's clean and crisp and beacons me to become an alpine chalet owner/retreat assistant for life. Pretty much the place is heaven and I could be happy to stay forever, or until it gets to cold. Unless, of course, a man comes along to warm me through the winter season, then I'm in for life. Tomorrow is the real love affair- my first taste of Italia!

AHHHHHHHHH!
I am leaving on a jet plane at 9:12am tomorrow morning! Chamonix bound wearing chacos and red nail polish. All "protective gear" packed and ready for the adventures ahead.
No matter what these next few weeks bring I have had the most fun planning and dreaming with my closest girl friends and family. All the words of wisdom and essential unessentials I have received have left me more prepared to take this journey...and more loved than ever.
Some words of inspiration that I hope work for you too:
"First and foremost, have fun on this adventure in your life. Next, please be careful while on this fabulous journey. Listen to your intuition. Remember, if you shall meet a special someone while there, that traveling is hard for me so he will have to come to Nashville to meet, greet and marry. Seriously, you will be amazed at what you uncover about yourself on this path that God has planned for you so be open and hold yourself in loving kindness always. Ok...enough already! Have the time of your LIFE!!"
-a second mother
"You deserve to be pursued, go receive the affections of an Italian man. And ride a vespa with one!"
-good ole man friend
"Bone a french man."
-insightful Ex-boyfriend
Today I got one more counseling sesh in to ground myself before flying the friendly skies. Thank you wise mentor for reminding me that beyond consumption of gelato what I want is to have an experience of surprise, adventure, confidence and self trust.
Here we go! Can't wati to share this with you all!!
So much love!

You say condoms, she says taser...I say vibrator
I cherish having friends and family that come from different
backgrounds and ways of life. It helps during moments of trial and tribulations to have a variety of folks to call on for support. Even if I inadvertently call on those who will give me the answer I
want regarding the issue at hand. Traveling to Italy seems to be similar to any life changing
event (weddings, babies, etc)- people have their opinions and want to
share them...lovingly, of course. So that brings me to my current
delimma. Do I take the condoms or the taser? My hope was that
when my sister told me she wanted to give me something for my trip that
it would be something pretty. A "Lipstick Stun-Gun" was totally
unexpected yet appropriate coming from my protective big sis. There is a lot of love in that taser. However I
am the type who would do better with the protection and preparedness of
a travel size vibrator at this point. Not that I have an aversion to physical expression of love, I just like there to be some true emotion and lower risk of getting an international STD. Despite suggestions from savvy world travelers I still say that I will not be kissing any men abroad. So unless a condom or electroshock can protect me from carb overload I think I will be safe without either. Then again my mantra is to stay present and open to what life offers..."that which feels good to your soul is always the right answer".
Travel update-
The travel agent has responded to my letter with a slightly
unprofessional email or two and threat of collectors. But I remain
comfortable with where I stand on the issue and will let it rest until
further notice (of being served).
In a moment of inspiration last week I changed my Florence travels to another
farm stay. This time in Siena Tuscany just outside of the walled city
San Gimignano. I chose this city because I love saying it and can't do so without expressive hand gestures. Actually I can't say much Italian without hand gestures which is a problem when I practice Italian while riding my bike to yoga.
Days til take off: 6
-For those keeping tabs,
Kissing sesh: 0 for 0

The carb count continues
It's been two days and it feels like 2 weeks of travel agency
correspondence and deliberation. I've done everything from spend hours perseverating over it with friends while consuming carbs and wine, to researching other
agency websites (via a savvy friend), to emailing a consumer
advocate for advice, etc etc. And it has come to this- Writing a letter to the
agency with the assistance of my wise mother and said savvy friend. It
is my belief that the gelato consumed pre-letter composing ensured a
profound correspondence. There was magic in the moment as we (read:
they) composed a letter stating the facts and only the facts. For good measure I stamped with a "Justice" stamp. Signed,
sealed, delivered, check enclosed for service fee, namaste. Moving
on...to France and Italy 2012! After all this drama I am decidedly open
to accepting the affections of Italian men and gelato equally. It just
seems like the right thing to do. Watching "Under The Tuscan Sun"
tonight made it obvious.
Speaking of namaste...you know that climbing/yoga fella I was dating a while back? Did you know that once during our dating time I made a kind gesture of inviting him to my weekly yoga class? True story. This yoga class is my sacred space where I fill up after a long week with a bff and her hubby at my side while our A-mazing instructor leads us into sweaty vinyasa bliss. Last Sunday was the first Sunday after the break-up that he has not attended the class. Seriously. Talk about being present and not allowing the disruptive and often narcissistic environment around you to disturb your inner yoga flow. Interesting how his presence actually doesn't throw me off but when a new handsome male attends class I can't balance in tree pose for the life of me. Every time I am in downward dog I sneak a peek. That's the kind of distraction I welcome in my sanctuary. Om Shanti. Namaste.
Shout out- to my savvy friend, mother, and guides that supported me through the travel agent lesson. The yoga retreat leader says there is always a learning experience right before a retreat begins. Lesson learned- Wait. Waaaait. Do not react immediately, get the facts and stand up for what feels true for you. Planning to practice during my travels abroad, especially when it comes to men, food and Italian leather goods.
Much love,

Shitters-
I started my trip countdown with my first blog post in a super long
time. I have been meaning to send it but flight reservations and
sleepless nights of thinking what to pack have made me slow. Today, I
learned that this adventure will start similarly to my match dating
adventure: ie- I once again unitentionally spent 800+ dollars. This
time it was on airfare. That's right folks, I now have
2 roundtrip flight tickets for my France-Italy trip. Unfortunately they
are both in my name and for the same dates. Shit, I say. Then I
remember we are all spiritual beings having a human experience and if
this is my growth opportunity for the month of August, so be it. But
still, shit. Seriously?
Here is how I meant this communication to commence:
Finding the love...
...One, eh make that 100, carbs at a time.
Caio bellas! This single gal is Italia bound but not before she does a little yoga retreating in the French Alps for good measure.
Currently my heart sits in that sweet post-breakup spot where it is not yet longing and/or lusting for another man. A perfect time to travel!
Italy has been written on my desire list for the past 3 years. Every new year "travel to Italy" is on the list again right alongside “meet LPP”. My excuse for delaying a trip was either timing, money or relationships. First I wanted to be single in Italy so I could be free to accept the affection of an Italian man. Then I decided that I didn’t have to be single to enjoy Italy. Now that my ticket (correction- 2 tickets) has been purchased I am decidedly content to travel single and without the affections of an Italian. In fact I am more excited to have a love affair with the food and wine. Mostly I am planning to do the Eat part of Eat, Pray Love.

My journey abroad will begin late August when I land in Chamonix France to assist with a 9 day yoga retreat. By yoga retreat I mean starting the day with relaxing blissful yoga followed by breakfast in the chalet prepared by our british love-bear of a host. Followed by a daily adventure such as glacier hiking, white water rafting, rock climbing, chocolate eating or spending the day at an Italian spa. Dinners will be prepared by our authentic Indian chef or 4 course preparing vegetarian chef.
So that’s the first course. Then a long train ride will take me through Milano to the town of Monterosso al Mare in Cinque Terre Italy. I am jealous of myself (less now that I spent 800+ uncessary buck-a-roos). But in all seriousness I am nervous-excited for this trip. Like dating a man I fear my expectations will not be met. I will be traveling solo in Italy so really the pressure is only on me. At least in this relationship I have control over how I react and experience myself- when I remember that truth. A truth I realize now after typing it that must exist while in relationship with any person, place or event. I always have control over myself.
Hmmmm...I am beginning to think this trip might have more to do with self growth beyond what I prepared initally.
The count down begins.
Goal 1: sleep through the night with out fretting about what to pack
Goal 2: stay single just in case I decide that I do in fact want to accept Italian affections
Goal 3: try not to by another flight for the same trip before I leave

2012
So far I have been on zero dates, that's right, zero dates in this new year of the dragon. Unless you count one painfully long gmail chat and one impromptu "parking" experience. The parking was actually pretty sweet since I never got the opportunity when I was 16. My teen years were pretty tame (hell my 20's were pretty tame) and I have been considering taking this opportunity to make up for lost time. "Seven minutes in heaven" would be next on my to-do list if my subconscious hadn't decided to redefine the meaning of "enjoy time with some men". It turns out I am not qualified for meaningless make-out sessions and I'm not sure why I thought that equated to "enjoy time with meb". A rare and fabulous revelation leading me to far better things. Starting with me.
What I am really looking for is more than some hanky panky because let's be honest, dawning my footed onsie and watching a romantic comedy satisfies me more than any man has in a while. So I am back on the straight and narrow, in the zone, eye on the prize if you will. Turns out I am behind the times, my girlfriends started 2012 way ahead of me (they are scientists so they are really smart and stuff)...
One is positive she saw my life path partner in her 6am yoga class. I have been going to 6am yoga twice a week since and I saw him once...several weeks ago. I have no doubt he will be back in February and in the mean time I am perfecting my powerful warrior pose. Namaste. Another friend thinks she met my LPP at the climbing gym. When I joined eharmony back in my younger years my tag line was "Looking to meet a quality man who can teach me to rock climb." I purchased my climbing shoes and harness this afternoon from a nice looking salesmen...who assisted me with the harness expertly I might add. It pays to be an REI member. The extra sweet part about this love finding mission is that I have fallen in love with yoga and climbing. But best of all is the quality time with my soul sistas.
Shit I say to men:
"Be vulnerable enough to make the call."
"Do you have that belaying device in purple? Then it would match my shoes." (he went to the back to check before I could ask, "Want to Co-Op with me? " or quietly whisper "I'd belay you.")
"I am not looking for a guy who just wants to bone me."
"Read my blog, if you are still interested write a comment or call me." I actually said this to a lovely gentlemen tonight at the bowling alley. Men in bowling shoes...I can't resist.
2012 is going to be a good year. I can feel it.
Love,

My collected works of the past month: Part Two
My future is looking bright. And includes an older man by 5-6 years whose astrological sign is Capricorn who I will meet in February and marry in 2013. At least that is what psychic Bob told me. I love him. I also love that my deceased grandmother told psychic Bob to tell me to "get out of your head!" Sound advice Granny, thanks. My only question is: does getting out of my head also mean enjoying time with some men before meeting my LPP in February? Granny?
I say yes. My counselor said to go ahead and enjoy some attention and flattery as long as I know that is all it is. Not to be confused with love or connection. Done. I have been flattered by a man who recently took me to dinner and then offered to massage my feet. This made up slightly for the 5 men I interacted with the week before who ranged from 30-70 years of age but all had one thing in common: douchebag-ness. It was pitiful, disappointing and unimpressive. And I told them so. It is true what they say about opening up to the laws of attraction. Men will start to flock your way because they all hear the call, you just have to weed through them and focus on the goal. One of my ex-boyfriends obviously has a keen sense of hearing. Somehow he always texts me right before I meet someone new. He texted me last week. In closing, my future is looking bright.
Total: $160
Here's to February and all the good times in between!
P.S.- I fear that a recent and intense spike in my libido will cause me to make decisions I would otherwise resist. My deepest hope is that this is merely related to the excessive watching of Hallmark Holiday movies combined with my failure to take my meds this weekend. In the mean time my mantra has been "take it to your vibrator". Luckily there was a special on batteries at CVS last week.

My collected works of the past month: Part One
Changing the dating pattern! I have successfully said, "no thank you". Hopefully changing the course of events in my dating life for the better. Forever. The drama that ensued post decline of dating services was like nothing I have ever witnessed or experienced, other than that "investment manager" who recently sent a 1600 word email to a first date that never returned his calls. The moral of my story (which is maybe not worth going into fully but did overwhelm my phone's text receiving capabilities) is to trust my instincts. When you think the man is a little effeminate for your taste, trust it. He will potentially turn into a needy man that can't handle rejection well. He may even proceed to text you the longest text you have ever gotten in your life about why you should give him a chance. He might even call your friend and ask her why you won't go on a date with him. Don't be surprised when he accidentally texts you instead of your friend about another girl. OMG. I conversed with the man for maybe 2 hours at a bar. I mean, I am cute and fun but seriously?
Dating is risky business. It is not to be taken lightly or to be attempted without a wing-woman to cover you. Said wing-woman must also have the skills and know-how to manage the man's insecurity for 24-48 hours post rejection even if she hardly knew him too.
My love and thanks to my wing woman for protecting me. I would do the same for you in a heartbeat...but pray neither of us have to again!
Favorite quote from a well seasoned woman:
"You only need one. Percentage wise you have only scraped the surface. Someone is looking for you too."
Total: $197
He did buy me a drink ...no...WAIT A MINUTE! His friend bought me a drink! Uf!

And another one...
...bites the dust.
After some pondering, self reflection and good ol' fashioned girl time (aka: Bitch Fest. Thank goodness for my sisters that help open my eyes to what I can't always see and feel free to say the words I don't always feel comfortable saying about men who will remain unnamed...eckhem).
I tried over the past week to think of a clever, eloquent and respectful way to express in blog format the end of my Mac & Cheese adventures. But people, it didn't really end that way. It was mostly a mixture of confusion, ambivalence, poor form and (to quote Mac) "asshole behavior". He is NOT an asshole. Up until now he has been a mostly respectful, fun, and giving man. I don't believe someones actions make them who they are, it just makes me not want to share time with them. But I digress...
A curious sick excuse ending a date early; decreased quantity and quality of texting led to the phone call, "Let's take a breather and plan for dinner next week." That was two weeks ago and there has been no communication from him to date. Excuse me, there was one text after 5 days sans communication. It basically read, "Are you traveling today or toiling away like the rest of us non-bankers?" (Is it sad that I have that memorized? Ummm...kinda.) I responded with an equally ambivalent text and then...nothing. (Just in case he had suffered serious injury or illness preventing him from communication I took the stalker liberty of seeing if he had any updates on facebook. Rest assured he is alive and well.) In an attempt to be decent and respectful of the time we shared I called Mac to put a sweet closure on things. I have successfully, or maybe more unsuccessfully, made closure with his voicemail. Awesome. Seriously? Seriously.
The most frustrating part about this is the lack of control and then self doubt I create in my head. And then hindsight sets in, damn it's 20/20 vision. The red, yellow and orange flags are all crystal clear now. A part of me recognized them early on, my gut gave me the "uh oh feeling" but I tucked them away as usual. I am beginning to see a pattern here. Step 1: Date a nice guy for 6 months, break up with him, he cries. Step 2: Date a no-so awesome guy for a month or two, he fades away leaving me confused. And repeat steps 1 and 2 two more times. On a positive note- my future is lookin' bright! Up next is a nice guy but this time I am manifesting something more! He may cry, I may cry. But not of a broken heart. Instead it will be from a sweet knowing that we are each others partner in life. Watch out people. Mac did often say, on more than one self deprecating occasion, "Date me and you are sure to meet your husband. Every woman I date marries the next guy she meets." Bring it.
In the mean time I will continue to enjoy this life, the expectancy of what is to come and have a little time to fill up with love and faith in me again. It is doubtful that I will sign back on to Match in the near future, but do not fret ye fine readers, I have much to post about lessons learned. It will be an intermezzo, if you will, until the next date. (I did have the opportunity to meet a fine gentlemen thanks to a group set up by sweet friends. I am not sure what if anything will come of it but he gives me faith that there are good ones out there. And some of them can even cook! With local produce!)
This blog began with appreciating the value of a dollar, eight hundred forty of them to be exact. I greatly value all the fun times I had with Mac. It was lovely being courted and swept away. Let's be honest, he was good blogging material. But as it goes in dating when the dust settled and reality kicked in we just weren't life path partner material for each other.
To Mac, good luck with your search ;)
I have a mirror that says "Loving oneself is the beginning of a life long romance." Amen. May you all have that kind of lifelong love and more.
Much love,
Your Uptown Girl
Total: Still $205
(I have recalled some past Match dates that may just bring that balance down to the double digits...one being the original "Fry Guy". Next time ladies.)

Lil' Annie Oakley
(From concertos to tractor pulls the man knows how to make a girl feel down right special)
So, I have this thing for bow ties. When I strategically asked Mac a few weeks ago if he ever wears them he replied he would love to but doesn't currently own one. As our symphony date approached I knew what I had to do. On Wednesday night I biked my little chassis to Brooks Brother's and purchased, according to the salesman, the quintessential bow tie. The "BB1" if you will. I was given a brief lesson in tying the BB1 then had it boxed (which looked worth as much as the bow tie) and strapped to my camelback for the ride home. I risked my life a few times trying to keep the box secure but it was well worth it!
Mac arrived sporting a dark blue suite and white shirt with subtle baby blue stripes...perfect!! I handed him the over sized bag and he immediately blushed then tore into it at a pace not fitting for my excitement. And...he loved it! I stood on the couch and tied it around his 17 1/2'' neck. Final time: 20 minutes. I felt a little anxious that he may not really like it as much as I hoped but looking at him I realized I wasn't that concerned. He looked damn fine to me so I was happy. And my counselor always says men are happy when their women are happy.
The combination of bow tie, cologne, grass hopper cocktail, and symphony took me to that place where anything is possible, where life is blissful and the man next to you could be everything you imagine. I whispered "I love this", and he replied "Me too." We sat there holding hands for two hours completely entranced by the music. It had triple the power of a quality romantic movie or an Otis Redding song. I loved that he loved it as much as I did...mush mush. Sit, Stay.
Forty eight hours later I found myself listening to the harmonious sounds of a good ole tractor pull. My journey to the country also included an introduction to the family farm chickens and the local leather shop where Mac bought me a hat perfect for shooting a 22 on the mark with my first try....and second, and third...! The meeting of the parents was brief and painless, almost to a curious extreme. I started to wonder if this dude brings so many chics to the farm that his parents are unimpressed by new women or maybe just me. It could also be that the combination of my classic beauty and cowboy boots threw them off a bit. Only time will tell. All that master shooting worked up an appetite that only a good burger and fries at the soda shoppe could satisfy. Done and done. I still get excited every time he orders fries.
We ended the night with a mostly terrible movie, some impressive guitar playing and quality cuddle time in his bachelor pad of a pool house. Of note, there is a bike in the kitchen and nothing but styrofoam containers and a pizza box filling the fridge. He wasn't kidding.
It pains me to say we are approaching that irreversible place where the courting efforts slowly diminish, where the possibility of never seeing another surprise bouquet of flowers is very real, where my zero balance may never be met. You know that time, when dinner dates are replaced by nights-in watching TV and going to bed early, pants on. Mac has just suggested two dating activities that are Free! However his attempts to help with dinner or willingness to watch girly TV do not go unrecognized. He is so good I can't even make him sound that bad for entertainment purposes on this blog.
I have seen from wence he came and continue to want him as my cuddle buddy until further notice.
Love and more love,
Uptown Girl
ps- I must admit something is in the air...it could just be that transition into fall. But I have a feeling there is going to be a shift that may not seem positive in the beginning but will all make sense in the end. Hopefully I will recognize it, embrace it and learn the lesson. If only I could do this on a daily basis in all my relationships of self, work, family and those complicatedly simple men folk.
Total: $205
(it is worth reporting that the tractor pull was $10 each! Likely the most expensive part of the weekend.)

Pardon the brief interlude...
Dear Friends,
My sincerest apologies for the delay in blogging! I credit it all to Mac&Cheese. For one he has neglected to send me the final version of his guest blog post and does not feel the unedited version will do the blog justice. Number two he is effectively making up for his blogging procrastination by spending quality time with me which in turn decreases my available time to blog. OMG it's been over a week, almost two for the love! Allow me to get you up to speed...
The last time you heard from me Mac and I were honoring the "pants on" rule all the while becoming more and more smitten. And so it continues. Per my mother's recommendation I will not go into anymore bedroom activities (or pool, kitchen, shower, etc) henceforth. I will merely state for the record that Mac has continued to honor all boundaries set forth (even if I am not) and his skill in kissing was only the tip of a sizable iceberg. Done.
Last Wednesday we met up for a late dinner which was meant to be preceded by a lunch date. Due to unruly clients and a tight schedule Mac had to cancel the lunch. He was sincerely apologetic and brought a beautiful bouquet of flowers to prove it. A close friend had requested to hang at my place for a nearby concert and Mac didn't skip a beat when I asked if she could join us for drinks before dinner. After drinks I not so strategically escorted my friend one block to the concert while Mac snagged a dinner table for us. During our walk my friend confirmed that Mac was cool enough to stick around for a second evaluation. At dinner Mac decided to tell me everything bad about him so that "if I decided in May of 2012 he could take his pants off I would be making an educated decision." It is safe to say his bad parts are equal to if not better than my own. He might have knocked off a few months just for the honesty. Well done sir.
On Friday Mac nonchalantly emailed to say he scored two 5th row seats to Bela Fleck for next Thursday. My response: "Shut Up! That is awesome!" (then immediately looked up Bela Fleck on Pandora to see what he was talking about. Sweet!)
Mac showed up Saturday afternoon for a hike I had suggested to start off our weekend. I failed to mention the hike was meant to be my workout for the day and not the leisurely hike he intended as evidenced by his slip-on Merrill's. An unintentional four point five miles later he regretted his shoe choice and lack of recent hiking experience. But his regret was laced with good humor and followed by a great dinner and early night in...bed. He also sweet talked me into a bit of healing touch on his knee (the fact that he was naked only makes the energy work more effective and this is in no way a sexual innuedo for other activites) and a foot massage. With clothing on we biked our way to my most favorite local eatery for brunch. Mac fell in love with the place and has been talking it up to friends since; scoring himself a few more points once again. With our stomachs full of good carbs we biked to the football game to which his parents had given us great tickets. Our home team won in a fabulous game of sportsmanship! And Mac told me I was prettier than all the cheerleaders combined. (So maybe he didn't say that out loud so much as with his eyes. He has honest eyes). With a post-win pep in our spin step we biked the hills back to my place and took a cool, very quick, dip in the pool. And here is something those of you who know me personally or any woman with a spit of body image issues can appreciate. I threw on my bikini, grabbed a towel, dashed up the stairs and took a speed walking jump into the pool with Mac close behind. I felt like a little girl who could care less about the way she looked and more about the fun she was having with this handsome man of a man. He jumped in after me, we simultaneously bobbed up from the surface saying "it's freezing" and quickly exited the pool laughing (causing everyone around us to feel madly jealous at our cuteness, I am sure of it!).
I bid farewell to Mac Sunday evening as he escorted me to the car of a grandfatherly neighbor who had requested I accompany him to dinner. Despite my previous reluctance to oblige I have turned a new leaf and decided, what's the harm? ($20 to the balance)

"You have zero percent body fat." -Mac (he really said that one out loud, twice! God bless him!)

Pillow Talk
(Squeal of delight and expectiation!)
My last (and wonderful) date with Mac was Saturday night/Sunday morning (eh hem). It's Tuesday and I am still regaining my strength. This whole dating a handsome man is interupting my blogging schedule along with my sleep, eating and exercise. Oh the blessed side effects of a new crush (ok maybe more than a crush, let's be honest).
After a thrilling afternoon of de-wallpapering my mother's bathroom I raced home to get date-ready. My plan was to nap, clean my abode, shower and pick out the perfect outfit...I had 2 hours. Needless to say there was no beauty rest to be had and the perfect outfit came close to being a catastrophe...my closet continues to show the aftermath. Thank goodness for friends who know my wardrobe and can dress me over the phone!
Luckily Mac was running late as well so by the time he arrived I was perched on the brick wall outside my building looking as if I was chilling there for the last half hour, care free with cute hair. Mac suggested a Steak Dinner when he arrived (score to the Match balance). I had a moment of anxiety that he was thinking Logan's Road House. Once again he picked the perfect place and confirmed that he had made reservations before I could finish the question. The steak was good, the company better. What can I say? He is good. To the point I have invited him to be a guest writer on the blog. At this point he is still only privy to the blog if I am reading it to him. However if he were smart and sneaky like I would be in this case he would have already found the link through a quality google search.
The night concluded with 90's coverband dancing. I don't recall the band being this good last time...maybe it's the man. We had a blast and moved up a notch from side-by-side dancing. Of note, he sings well in a fake microphone.
Cuddling proficiency was demonstrated effectively (with pants on per my orders) and we found ourselves talking more than sleeping. The kissing is ahhh-mazing. I may have gotten 3 hours of sleep but I am living on that hidden energy only a sweet man can unlock. I think it is pretty safe to say we are both looking forward to the continued adventures of Watch Girl and Mac&Cheese.
My apologies for the lack of humor as the smitteness has taken over my writing and caused it to have more mush than usual. I will try to get back on track soon...but I am going to revel in this for as long as I please. Thank you very much!
Total: $395
PS- I have no idea what Mac will write in his guest blog but I will go ahead and release myself from any blame henseforth. (unless it is awesome in which case I take full responsibility!)

Woe is me.
I have a somewhat perm-a-smile. I believe it is quite becoming actually...along with my make-out chin.
Last night Mac laughed to the point of falling off my couch; I was reading him the blog in it's entirety. When I finished reading at 12:30am he held my face, kissed me passionately (I love the face hold kiss) and told me he looks forward to reading about our future dates. Especially the one that started 6 hours prior to the reveal of the dating blog...he's a little proud, and rightly so.
Mac came over to pump up my bike tires (literally) and then proceeded to lead me on a bike ride to the park. Once there we rode around as if there was no real plan for the evening but hanging at the romantically lit park. When we "happened" upon "Shakespeare In The Park" he suggested we check it out. He spoke briefly to the woman at the tent who happily introduced herself and led us to our seats. I was a bit perplexed but followed happily...and found myself in front of "The Royal Box". Complete with chairs, dining table and a catered dinner. Then he pulled out a bottle of red wine from his satchel and poured me a glass. Seriously?! Who is this guy?! I am rarely surprised as my mother can attest from several failed attempts at birthday parties. In my wise old age I have learned that only I can really meet my expectations and therefor I make the plans. This was way beyond my expectations and I was a little shocked. I questioned Mac about his stance on PDA and when I got the all-clear I immediately kissed him and continued to do so intermittently for the rest of the evening. In hindsight this was probably his main objective. Well played Mr. Cheese, well played. Romeo and Juliet was captivating and refreshingly comical at times. My only complaint is the damn arm rests on the chairs...they were not allowing me to get close enough to this fine specimen of a man. (What is the female equivalent of cock-blocked? I just checked urban dictionary and it goes both ways. Please also note it can be used in relation to non-sexual activity which is my intent here. Sit. Stay). What we lacked in proximity we made up for in hand holding and post theatre couch kissing. PS- the kissing has hit a nice rhythm that I find rather enjoyable, hence the 1:00am bedtime.
I took the liberty of reinforcing the "monogamous chassis" rule with which Mac quickly verbalized understanding and agreement. Hinting that there are not many if any other chassis he is interested in at present. Duly noted. Plan "C" is a go.
Next up, 90's coverband dancing date Saturday night per my suggestion. Mac quickly vetoed my offer to make dinner with a laugh. I questioned his faith in my cooking abilities; he replied that dinner is on him as he is trying to aide me in bringing my balance to zero. God love him. I am a little jealous of myself currently.
total: $415 (some gratuity added for impressive date planning and execution despite blown bike tire on return ride home which cost 20 minutes of make-out time but demonstrated our strong team work)

ps- Mac just sent me a pic from his phone with the caption:
"Eat your heart out Elevator Guy. -Mac" It was a view from the Royal Box.
To Match or not to Match?
Mr. Elevator Man escorted me from our lobby to a local bar where we enjoyed thrilling discussions of topics including but not limited to euthanasia and arranged marriages. I learned that I can develop a taste for whiskey in my berry mojito once I get half way through. He was sweet, motivated in life, and involved in charity events. Now why didn't I think of this before! Attend charity events to meet financially stable bachelors who, if not completely honest in their intent, have the smarts to feign philanthropic support.
This might have to become my new avenue to aquire dates as my Match subscription has...dun dun dun...expired. My Match page now blinks "subscribe" and teases me by announcing "2 new emails in your inbox! 3 men are interested in you! See if one of them could be your life path partner! Subscribe Now or you are shit out of luck!" So I have a few options: a.) Sign up for another 3 months for $60 making sure to mark my calendar and all of my friends' calendars with the cancellation date! b.) Go to every charity event in town...on second thought this could be very pricey as you often have to pay to get a table. c.) Cross my fingers that Mac has solid potential and forge ahead full steam. (Signing back on to Match if and when needed)
After our email exchange requesting shorter spacing between dates Mac suggested he bring me dinner when I landed home from a long weekend of travel. This time the cleaning effort paid off! He brought pizza and a spirit for kissing that was more than welcome. During our couch make-out sesh (finally!) he suggested we ride our bikes to Thursday night's date location. I wholeheartedly agreed and requested some bike maintenance support pre-ride. He took this opportunity to use the metaphor of chassis adjusting to cleverly determine my boundaries and intentions in all things physical. My response: "I only let men adjust my chassis when they are in a monogamous relationship with said chassis." Sit. Stay.
Growing smitten...

Sweetness
Despite his love for the hand gun Mac sent me a sweet bouquet of flowers yesterday.
Wednesday found us on a lovely sushi date followed by cover band music downtown. Please note this was not followed by a make-out sesh in a clean apartment, just more florescent elevator-lobby kisses. I refuse to clean in the future on principle. Unfortunatelyy any efforts to rally for the date only exacerbated my night time coughing fits, preventing any quality sleep and the ability to get out of bed for work the next morning. Somehow this cough is more powerful than Nyquil but has met it's match with funny emails and flowers from a handsome man (See clever email communication below). Admittedly, something has come over me...I even paid for one of Mac's drinks last night! In fact I demanded it. What happened to DEFCON One (1) I ask you! I continue to have some connections on Match that have potential but I am lacking energy to move forward with them, I would just rather hang with the Mac. But I will persevere and keep my date with Elevator Man tonight. This could get me in trouble since he might see my frolicking in the pool with Mac next week. It is also quite possible that he will turn out to be A-mazing and knock Mac out of the running. Hopefully he finds my hoarse voice attractive and can see beyond the constant hacking.
An email convo with Mac:
To whom it may concern,
I am opposed to waiting until next Thursday to see one Mr. Mac A. Cheese.
Your consideration in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Signed,
Uptown Girl
His response:
Dear Ms. Uptown:
Thank you for your recent note. We welcome your feelings on any and all important issues. The eight (8) day layoff between dates with Mr. Cheese was already a matter of grave internal concern, and your opposition to same is both duly noted and much appreciated. At the time of this writing, we are working on solutions both to solve the problem itself, and to ensure that similar situations do not arise in the future requiring your opposition. In a related note, we have now perfected our method of waiter-payment which Ms. Uptown recently and astutely illustrated was fatally flawed.
Your input is invaluable to us and any suggestions are always welcome. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. We look forward to resolving all issues to your complete satisfaction.
Yours truly,
To Whom It May Concern
Labor Day love to all!
your Uptown Girl
PS- Mac informed me the other night that his family knows me as "Watch Girl" since I checked the time on his watch at the end of our first date to signal I was ready for the date to end. There may be potential here...at least for some awesome Halloween costumes.

Guilty Pleasures
"Hella" status achieved as promised by Mac!
Local Cheese Burger with a side of Waffle Cheese Fries (praise be) followed by dancing for 3 hours to my favorite 80's band!! What?!! OMG. This could be love!
We shyly danced to some 80's classics; my interpretive dance moves obviously capturing his heart. There was some sweet innocent flirting followed by a not-so-romantic good night hug under the florescent lights of the elevator lobby of my building. Just outside there were inebriated college folk falling in the bushes and immediately taking pics which will surely turn up on fb. During the hug I made a wise-ass comment about Mac's post-dancing sweaty shirt...and then he kissed me. What can I say, I have a way with words and setting the mood. It only took 4 dates, seeing me in a bikini and witnessing me sing my heart out to Journey. He texted me when he was home safe, "I had a blast tiny dancer." Be still my heart, he even quotes Elton John.
That was Saturday night. Now it's Wednesday. Two dates in a row I have cleaned my apartment unnecessarily. In order to prevent any further confusion and over exertion I have asked him if I should clean my apartment for an after dinner make out sesh tonight. He has plans to pick me up a 7pm tonight. This is all I know.
To bring you up to speed on other adventures in dating- the brunch date with Mr. Coke cost me $15 and that's all I have to say about that. Elevator Man has been traveling for work but we are having drinks on Friday night. I have a good feeling about him. A few of my past dates have called or texted and I am not sure how or if I want to respond. Oh the challenges of being cute and fun. Any advice at this point is welcome.
Friendly advice: "Stop pondering what he thinks about you and pay attention to where his feet are. They are with you. It's as simple as that."
With love,
Uptown Girl
ps- I have to give a shout out to my sweet friend who has been coaching me through this odyssey called Match dating. Her wise council has even inspired some once non-believers to get on the Match train. It can be difficult to traverse alone so if any of you out there need a wing-woman for the online dating scene she is offering her services for a small (and worth it!) fee.

A lesson in preaching
If you are going to preach it, practice it! I am known for loathing the custom of courting via text and find men who do to be unworthy of my affection.
I have just successfully stood Mr. Coke up without my knowledge or intent all because I texted! Oh my goodness! I feel awful. It went like this: I couldn't decide when would be the best time to meet since I was trying to balance 3 potential weekend dates. I suggested to Mr. Coke via text that we meet up for brunch, hesitating to call for some reason I am still unsure. I failed to mention in the text that I meant Sunday. He showed up at the agreed upon restaurant at noon today! I was across town having lunch with a friend and paying little attention to my cell phone (highly unusual behavior). When I got in my car at 1pm I had 3 texts from Mr. Coke starting with "I'm here" ending a half hour later with "Thank you!" (Read: thanks a lot for standing me up you big poo head) I immediately called him and apologized for the miscommunication. I offered to meet for brunch tomorrow and make it my treat. He accepted with a slight and understandable hesitation in his voice. CRAP! All of this could have been avoided if I had just called like I said I was going to. Lesson: What you preach is right, practice it for the love!
Hopefully I will not learn any difficult lessons on my date with Mac tonight.
Total: still $595, until I have to add back whatever brunch costs tomorrow.

Confession
I cleaned the apartment.
But bless his heart Mac didn't try to make one move. He exceedingly honored the no-access memo...a little to my dismay. We enjoyed a poolside dinner followed by a leisurely swim where we delved further into hand gun carrying and Match dot com-ing. I must admit I was a little confused when we parted with another kind hug and plans for a 4th date. A few minutes later he texted me that I look "quite nice in a bikini". Seriously?! I guess they are damned if they do, damned if they don't. Either they aren't complimenting me enough causing me to be insecure or they step over the line and I accuse them of only liking me for my body. I will take it to my therapist.
Before I continue I would like to take this opportunity to formally state that I have no intention of demeaning, disrespecting or misrepresenting my dates. (Read: My mom is worried my dates may find my blog and it will hurt their feelings.) I will try to stay true to the facts as best my memory serves. My goal here is to innocently share my dating life lessons so that others can receive the knowledge that I have acquired. Just sharing the wealth of $840 with my sisters.
So, Mac has a tattoo. He would be comfortable with me telling you this because he dislikes it vehemently. Imagine if you will the skull of a bull centered over the cross of a Native American axe and spike with a red background. This fist sized specimen of body art is located on his calf/shin. Oh dear. What is a tatoo-less, never dated a tatood-man, and often absurdly picky girl to do? Surprisingly I don't really mind it. Somehow I continue to enjoy him despite the little things that would have caused me to sign off in the past. I have two theories: A) His character and our connection is deeper than the surface by which I usually judge men. B) He has a little bad boy in him and makes me laugh thereby causing me to lose my good judgement completely...this one makes me a little nervous.
Despite the fact that he has been nothing but respectful I find myself questioning his motives and our connection. Fortunately I have dear friends who have witnessed my dating trials and tribulations through the years. They have a not so subtly but always loving way of putting me in my place. "This is what you always do! You start making them meet mark after mark. Just have fun!"
New mantra: Follow the Fun. Sit, Stay.
In other news, Elevator Man and Mr. Coke have requested a weekend meet up, not together. I am not sure when to fit them in. All I know is I have one week and roughly $615 to go!
Mac has promised, and I quote, "a super-duper-hella-awesome date" Saturday night. Ahh the anticipation.

Ask the universe and the universe will respond...
...It obviously respects the rules of engagement. Bring on the dates people!
I just scored another dinner date at one of my favorite restaurants! I was looking forward to a nice salmon plate but more importantly the man. Turns out he is better on paper, a disappointment my sister and I felt equally. She had a "good feeling" about him. (Please note this is not a rare response from her. She has been known to pick out several men as my life path partner. I guess we have to define more clearly how long the path is.) Lately most of my dates that didn't make it to number 2 were due to a mutual lack of lovin' feelin'. Unfortunately "Paper Boy" is showing signs of feeling a spark that isn't so mutual. He kissed me on the cheek and texted me early this morning thanking me for a great date. Crap.
This morning I woke up to 3 emails:
Match 1 asked me out to a sushi making class on Saturday afternoon. I am declining because I don't get a "good feeling" from his pics and would hate to potentially waste a perfect Saturday afternoon. Would much rather hang with the girls who are always reliable and lovable.
Match 2 is a 'new to town' fella who noted my cosmic and spiritual connection. Nice. He works for Coca Cola. I don't have a spiritual connection to Coke, but I will give him a first date if he asks. At least he used the word cosmic. He grew up on the west coast...more points.
Match 3 turned out to be my neighbor. We had sent a few emails and then ran into each other in the elevator Monday morning. The elevator I never use since I walk to work. The elevator I was using on my first day of Jury Duty. Note to self: Look cute, even for Jury Duty! To my good fortune "elevator man" does not judge people at first glance (or has poor eyesight) and sent me a sweet email mentioning our brief encounter. We did not acknowledge each other in the elevator to prevent any discomfort to fellow riders...and personal embarrassment. There could be a date in our future, or at least awkward meetings at the pool.
In my infinite wisdom I have invited Mac to the pool this afternoon. Bathing suit on a 3rd date, brilliant! On a positive note, Mac is picking up dinner for a poolside picnic...I think he is falling for me. Bless him, he has no idea. Along with texting him my address I informed him that he would only be allowed on the pool deck. To prevent myself from an unexpected moment of weakness I am leaving the apartment messy. (i.e. wearing white granny panties)
"sit, stay. good girl."
Total: ($640) Question: Do parentheses mean positive or negative value?
PS- Jury Duty was a real treat. At one point while in the jury box I began laughing inappropriately. I literally had to turn my chair and bite my lip while digging my nails into my arms...it took 5 min for me to get control.
PSS- Love on the ones you love. A dear friend lost her love last night...talk about defining the the length of the path. To quote her favorite quotable movie, "I would rather have 30 minutes of wonderful than a life time of nothin' special." I am so happy she knows what wonderful feels like.
